His Dark Materials (a trilogy by Philip Pullman) By Catherine on 8/25/2007 11:01:00 AM

Well, this morning I finished book three of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Please don't tell JK Rowling, but I think I have forsaken thee, Harry Potter, for Lyra Belacqua. I must admit, when I first saw the books at Borders almost a year ago, I wanted to own them simply because they are lovely, with intricately illustrated covers and shiny letters. When I got inside Lyra's Oxford in the first book, it was confusing and at times a slow read, but by page 35 or so I was so enthralled I couldn't put it down. Families, politics, philosophy, religion (and criticism thereof) all came together to basically blow my mind. I finished all three in 8 days. It would have been less, pesky sleep. There's a movie coming out in December, check out the trailer. It looks good to me, but I always like the books much more in the end.

And so, this is my dæmon, which in His Dark Materials is the physical manifestation of the soul in animal form.
